How many sessions will I need?

Clients usually find relief after several sessions but may get results even after one session.  The total number of sessions, and their frequency, will depend on the body's individual requirements and the reflexologist will discuss this with their clients.

Are there any side effects?

There are very few side effects to a session because reflexology is not intrusive.  Directly after a session, clients are either very relaxed or feel highly alert and refreshed.  As the body flushes out toxins, one common side effect reported is an increased number of visits to the bathroom.

Does it tickle?

Lots of people worry that they can't have reflexology because they're ticklish, but it isn't a problem. Light but firm pressure is applied to the feet in such a way as to relax the nervous system in a matter of moments.  Therefore even the most sensitive individual soon realizes reflexology is not ticklish.    

Does it hurt?

Experienced, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet.  During a session the reflexologist works on these points to release blockages, restore the flow of energy and help the nervous system to achieve normal functioning.  Occasionally releasing these blockages can cause discomfort during a session.   A good reflexologist

will always work within the threshold of the client.

Are there times when reflexology cannot be done?

Although a serious reaction to a reflexology session is rare, there are situations when the use of reflexology is not appropriate.

• Varicose veins which are dilated, knotty and irregular shaped veins with incompetent valves

• Severe edema

• Current fractures, recent surgeries, or severe sprains of the foot or ankle

• Contagious or infectious diseases or anything that appears to be such on the client’s foot unless checked out by a doctor first  (athlete’s foot [tinea], streptococcus infection, or anything that looks like an infection, etc.)

• Lacerations, ulcers, open wounds and/or sores which are oozing fluids on the feet

• Ingrown toe nails or corns*

• Gout*

• After organ transplant until a release is obtained from the physician

• During early stages of induced labor until a release is obtained from the physician

*One can usually work safely with an extremely light touch around or on these problem areas.  However, the professional reflexologist always uses discretion when working on a client with chronic and/or degenerative diseases like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, cancers, etc.

The above contraindications are the primary contraindications implemented by the national reflexology board (ARCB).  There may in fact be additional contraindications.  A professional reflexologist will discuss them with you and your doctor on a case by case basis.

Do Reflexologists diagnose medical conditions?

No, it is important to know that Reflexologists:

• Do not diagnose.

• Do not prognosticate.

• Do no treat for specific illness or disease but rather treat for overall health enhancement.

• Do not recommend over-the-counter medications, vitamins or herbs.

• Do not prescribe or adjust prescription medication.
